For forty years this extraordinary building has been one of the most recognisable landmarks in London. What's always fascinated me is that it was never designed to be a monument. Sir Richard Rogers designed it to change. In 1986, the Lloyd's building turned traditional architecture inside out. Forty years later it's hard to imagine Lloyd's or this part of the city without this building.
The Lloyd’s Building: The story behind the icon
Built to meet the needs of a growing market, the Lloyd’s Building challenged conventions from the start. Richard Rogers’ pioneering design moved services including pipework, stairs and ducting to the outside, creating flexible trading spaces within.
Forty years later, that principle of flexibility continues to shape a building designed to evolve with the market it serves.

Of course the Lloyd's Building is famous for its architecture, but what makes it special, is everything that happens inside it.
The public and the market's reaction to this building, was like a spaceship had landed in Lime Street…
