Lloyd's as a counterparty

14 September 2026

Financial institutions, in purchasing insurance coverage from Lloyd’s syndicates, regularly assess the Lloyd's market as a counterparty as part of their credit, risk management and due diligence processes. This page provides an overview of the Lloyd's market structure, financial security framework and oversight arrangements, together with links to more detailed information on topics commonly considered during those assessments.

What is Lloyd's?

Lloyd's is a highly rated insurance and reinsurance market with a structure that differs from a conventional insurance company. Insurance business is underwritten by the members of Lloyd’s (the capital providers) who group together to form syndicates and appoint a managing agent to manage the business of the syndicate. The market combines specialist underwriting expertise with a framework of capital, financial security and oversight that supports policyholders and counterparties.

Lloyd's financial strength

A key feature of the Lloyd's market is the framework that supports its financial strength. The market benefits from the Chain of Security, a multi-layered structure comprising syndicate-level assets, Funds at Lloyd's and central resources, including the Central Fund. Lloyd's also operates a risk-based capital framework, compliant with the PRA’s Solvency UK regime, and oversees underwriting performance across the market. Together, these arrangements support the resilience of the Lloyd's market.

Ratings

Leading international credit rating agencies assign ratings to the Lloyd's market and assess its financial strength by considering a broad range of factors, including financial strength, capital adequacy, market position, operating performance and elements of the Lloyd's framework described above. These external assessments provide an independent perspective on the financial strength of the Lloyd's market.  All syndicates at Lloyd’s benefit from the same rating given to Lloyd’s.

Lloyd's Europe

Certain counterparties may also interact with Lloyd's Insurance Company S.A. ("Lloyd's Europe"), an authorised Belgian insurance company that was established by Lloyd’s to provide coverage for risks with an EU risk location. Lloyd's Europe is wholly owned by the Society of Lloyd's and maintains its own regulatory capital. All business underwritten by Lloyd's Europe is reinsured to Lloyd's syndicates and, as a result, benefits from access to the wider Lloyd's capital structure, including the Chain of Security and Central Fund, in addition to Lloyd's Europe's own capital resources.
