Dame Clara Furse DBE joined the Council on 1 September 2026, bringing extensive experience to the Council spanning global financial markets, banking and insurance.

Dame Clara began her career as a broker before joining UBS, where she became Managing Director responsible for the firm’s global futures and options business. She subsequently served as Group Chief Executive of Crédit Lyonnais Rouse. From 2001 to 2009, Dame Clara was Chief Executive Officer of London Stock Exchange Group, where she successfully led significant modernisation and transformation initiatives. Since retiring from that role, Dame Clara has held a number of non-executive positions, including with Legal & General Group, Nomura Holdings, Vodafone Group and Amadeus IT Holdings. Dame Clara also brings governmental and macroprudential policy experience from her service as a non-executive director at the UK Department for Work and Pensions and an External Member of the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee. Most recently Dame Clara served for nine years as Chair of HSBC UK Bank plc, stepping down from the role in 2026, and she continues to serve as a non-executive director with Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A. and Société Générale S.A.

In 2008, Dame Clara was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to the financial services industry.
